LONDON - Japan's former World No. 1 Naomi Osaka was beaten 7-6(4), 6-4 by Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic in the Wimbledon quarterfinals on Tuesday.

The four-time Grand Slam winner had booked her place in the last eight with a straight-sets victory over top seed Aryna Sabalenka, having never previously gone beyond the third round at the All England Club.

The 14th-seeded Osaka was aiming to become the first Japanese woman to reach the Wimbledon semifinals since Kimiko Date in 1996.

She had yet to drop a set in her first four matches and came into the clash on the No. 1 Court with a perfect 5-0 record in Grand Slam quarterfinals.

The 10th-seeded Muchova took control in the tiebreaker after a closely fought first and played a composed second set to clinch a semifinal berth.

"She (Osaka) is a great tennis player and I'm glad I won today," Muchova said.

Muchova will face U.S. No. 7 seed Coco Gauff in the semifinals.
