Pakistan parliament elects ruling party nominee Abbasi as new PM

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was elected Tuesday as the new prime minister of Pakistan, succeeding Nawaz Sharif whom the Supreme Court ruled last week was unfit to hold public office.Abbasi, the nominee of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, beat three other candidates nominated by opposition parties in the vote within the National Assembly, the lower house of the Pakistan parliament.He had been expected to win, as the ruling PML-N controls 187 of the 342 seats in the National Assembly.
