TOKYO - An Audemars Piguet wristwatch stolen from a store in a shopping complex in Tokyo's Nakano Ward last week has been returned via courier, investigative sources said Monday.

A package containing the luxury watch and an apology note arrived at the Nakano Broadway shopping complex store on Sunday morning from Aichi Prefecture, according to the sources. The watch's identification number matched that of the stolen item, and investigators found no significant damage.

The sender's name was written on the package, but Tokyo police suspect it may have been a false name.

The Swiss-made watch, valued at approximately 46 million yen ($291,500), was stolen from the store on the complex's third floor on Thursday evening.

A man posing as a customer requested to try on the timepiece and fled with it still clasped to his left wrist after spending about eight minutes in the store, according to the police.

The theft was the second of its kind to hit Nakano Broadway over the past months, with four luxury watches worth totaling 200 million yen stolen in August from a first-floor store in the complex by two Chilean men. They were arrested later that month.
