TOKYO - The University of Tokyo said Monday it selected Yuko Fujigaki as its next president to succeed Teruo Fujii, making her the first woman to lead Japan's top academic institution.
Fujigaki, 64, a professor affiliated with the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, has expertise in science and technology studies. Her six-year term will begin in April.
After a vote by fellow professors and staff, she came in second. The university said she was chosen following "comprehensive consideration."
Her tenure comes as the university seeks to strengthen its governance in the wake of corruption scandals involving faculty members. The prestigious school is known for producing top scholars and government officials.
