TOKYO - Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Wednesday submitted to parliament a statement from her secretary denying his role in alleged videos smearing opponents during last year's party leadership race, amid opposition criticism that she was refusing to answer questions herself on the issue.
The statement from Takaichi's publicly funded first secretary, however, is unlikely to mark the end of scrutiny of the case, with opposition parties criticizing it as largely in line with what the prime minister has explained so far and "not enough to shed light on the truth."
