NEW YORK - Chicago White Sox first baseman Munetaka Murakami is making progress toward returning from a right hamstring strain and has resumed baseball activities such as running, throwing and hitting off a tee, according to White Sox manager Will Venable, MLB.com reported Thursday.

The Japanese slugger suffered the injury while running the bases against the Detroit Tigers on May 29.

Venable said the team was gradually increasing the intensity of Murakami's training but had not targeted a date for his return.

"It's just day by day, and (there's) no real timeline on what that looks like," Venable told MLB.com.

Murakami last Friday told reporters he expected to be back in four to six weeks "if everything goes smoothly."

The former Yakult Swallows star has played 57 games in his Major League Baseball rookie season, batting .240 with 20 home runs and 41 RBIs.
