The 7th Lu Ban Cultural Festival and Mozi-Lu Ban Academic Symposium recently opened in Tengzhou, Shandong Province, bringing together more than 130 cultural scholars, architectural experts, and master craftsmen to explore the contemporary value of traditional Chinese craftsmanship, according to the Office of the Cyberspace Affairs Commission of the CPC Zaozhuang Municipal Committee.
Under the theme "Carrying Forward the Lu Ban Culture, Empowering Innovation and Development," the festival features a series of public events, including a Lu Ban Lock assembly and disassembly competition and a special exhibition of woodcarving art, offering visitors a hands-on experience of the unique allure of ancient Chinese handcraftsmanship.
Mozi and Lu Ban stand as two towering figures of ancient Chinese science and technology. Mozi, who advocated ideas such as "universal love" and "opposition to offensive warfare," left behind invaluable contributions to geometry and physics. Lu Ban, inventor of the saw, the carpenter's square, and the ink marker, made advances in the development of mortise-and-tenon joinery, exemplifying the ingenuity of the ancient Chinese mind.
As the birthplace of both Mozi and Lu Ban, Tengzhou has in recent years stepped up efforts to research, preserve and promote their cultural legacies. The city has joined forces with multiple universities to establish dedicated research platforms for the study of Mozi-Lu Ban culture, bringing together scholars and experts to compile and publish more than 300 academic monographs that decode the cultural significance of these two historical giants. Local institutions in Zaozhuang have set up Lu Ban workshops that host regular vocational skills competitions, transforming the spirit of craftsmanship into a tangible educational experience. The city has also developed the Mozi Science and Innovation Park and the Lu Ban Science and Innovation Park, attracting nearly 100 high-tech enterprises and research institutions. The parks are helping bring new materials, technologies and products from research labs to the marketplace.
