Democrats have retaken control of the House of Representatives in Tuesday's midterm elections, according to projections made by major U.S. media outlets.

Republicans faced strong headwinds going into the polls amid voter discontent over inflation, gas prices and the cost of living with the U.S.-Iran war, started by President Donald Trump in February, in a stalemate.

Media exit polls and partial vote counts suggest that after securing a majority in the House, Democrats are also likely to regain control of the Senate, where they need to gain an additional four seats to secure a majority.

Republicans held a slim majority in the House and a 53-47 majority in the Senate.
