BERLIN - Wolfsburg's Kento Shiogai bagged a brace before Freiburg's Keisuke Goto netted a double of his own to steer the home team to a 3-2 comeback win in the second round of the German Cup on Wednesday.
The 21-year-old Japanese forwards, who both appeared in this summer's World Cup in North America, played big parts in turning the game around for their respective teams in a thrilling encounter at Freiburg's Europa-Park Stadion.
Igor Matanovic's sixth-minute header gave the hosts the lead, but Shiogai got the second-tier side level just two minutes later when he latched onto a long ball behind the Freiburg backline and smashed home a low half-volley.
The former NEC Nijmegen man put the visitors in front two minutes from the break when he found himself unmarked to bury a close-range header from a left-wing corner.
Goto came on to replace compatriot Yuito Suzuki in the 68th minute and got Freiburg level seven minutes later when he leaped high to meet a corner, also from the left, sending a looping header into the net.
The former Anderlecht man sealed the dramatic win in second-half stoppage time as he controlled a long ball superbly in the air inside the opposing half, took a touch and lifted his shot from 25 meters out over Wolfsburg keeper Timon Wellenreuther who was off his line.
Summer signing Goto has one goal in the Bundesliga so far, while Shiogai is seeking his first goal in the second tier this campaign after Wolfsburg were relegated last season.
