Heavy rain hits Tokyo area as typhoon approaches eastern coast, killing 2

TOKYO - A large typhoon was moving closer to eastern Japan's Pacific coast Monday, bringing heavy rain to the Tokyo area and triggering landslides in Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures, with two people confirmed dead, according to local governments.

In Sodegaura, Chiba, a 51-year-old man who was working to restore a damaged road died at a hospital after a landslide engulfed him and the hydraulic excavator he was operating, police said. In the same city, a woman in her 40s sustained minor injuries after driving into debris from a landslide, the prefecture said.
