TOKYO - Japan's industry ministry is seeking to conduct a preliminary survey in Hitachiomiya in Ibaraki Prefecture, near Tokyo, to select the city as a potential disposal site for highly radioactive waste, a source familiar with the matter said Monday.
The ministry is expected to approach the municipality with the plan, according to the source. Hitachiomiya would become the fifth location for such a preliminary survey if it accepts the plan.
The selection process would involve multiple stages spanning years.
