An animation movie featuring manga sensation "Chiikawa" has topped 10 billion yen ($63 million) at Japan's box office, following its release in July, its creators said Sunday.
"Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island" is the first movie based on a popular manga by illustrator Nagano.
The name Chiikawa combines the shortened forms of the Japanese words for small and cute. The manga series began with social media posts by Nagano in 2020, and it has since gained popularity in Japan and beyond.
