Japan's real wages in May rise 1.4% on year, up for 5th straight month
TOKYO - Japan's real wages in May rose 1.4 percent from a year earlier, increasing for the fifth straight month and marking the longest positive streak since a seven-month run in 2021, reflecting robust labor-management negotiations, government data showed Tuesday.
Nominal wages per worker, including base and overtime pay, were up 3.2 percent at 311,165 yen ($1,900), marking the fourth straight month of growth surpassing 3 percent for the first time in more than 34 years, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare said.

Large, "violent" typhoon may approach Japan's Okinawa later this week
TOKYO - A large and "violent" typhoon is moving westward near the Mariana Islands in the Pacific and may approach areas south of Japan's Okinawa later this week, according to the Japanese weather agency.
Typhoon Bavi is forecast to move to areas east of the Philippines before approaching Okinawa Prefecture around Friday and Saturday. It is likely to head to the East China Sea afterward.

MUFG, JCB to woo wealthy in Southeast Asia with luxury card for Japan trips

Passwords of over 7 million people leaked in cyberattack: KDDI
TOKYO - Telecommunications giant KDDI Corp. said Monday that passwords of about 7.62 million people, along with about 12.23 million corporate and personal email addresses, have been leaked due to unauthorized access detected in June to its mailing system used by six internet service providers.
KDDI, known for its "au" brand services, said there have been no reports of any secondary damage and that the unauthorized access resulted from a cyberattack exploiting a vulnerability in software implemented as part of the system.

Indonesian woman fatally stabbed in apartment in central Japan
SHIZUOKA, Japan - A 20-year-old Indonesian woman was stabbed to death in her apartment in Hamamatsu, central Japan, police said Monday as they investigate whether a man who was fatally hit by a train nearby was involved in the case.
The woman, identified as Keiko Altaira Hanafi, was found stabbed and in a critical condition by a police officer at around 11:40 a.m. in the apartment where she lived with her parents. She was later confirmed dead at a hospital.

Ex-Sankei Shimbun reporter punched in Taiwan, man arrested
TAIPEI - Think tank CEO Akio Yaita, a former reporter of Japan's Sankei Shimbun newspaper, was punched in the face on Monday by a man in the central Taiwanese city of Taichung, with police arresting the offender holding a Hong Kong passport, according to media reports.
The motive of the suspect in his 30s, who was arrested at Taichung International Airport, remains under investigation. The attack left Yaita with cuts to his lips.
