BEIJING - Local authorities in Beijing said Thursday a 66-year-old man who died after crashing his light aircraft into the city's tallest building last week had suicidal thoughts, repeatedly writing in his diary about "ending his life."
The Chaoyang district government in the capital said it had concluded that the incident was caused by "personal reasons," and also disclosed that the 13 people injured were not in life-threatening conditions.
The authorities did not make public the name of the building, but videos and images that went viral indicated it was the CITIC tower, also known as China Zun, a 528-meter-tall, 108-story building in Beijing's central business district.
The man, identified only by his surname Liu, was a Beijing resident who lived alone following a divorce. He had a history of chronic insomnia and anxiety, the Chaoyang authorities said.
Only the pilot was on board the two-seat light sport airplane when it hit the high-rise building last Friday evening.
