PHOENIX, Arizona - Shohei Ohtani hit 3-for-4 and scored the opening run for the Los Angeles Dodgers in Monday's 4-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The two-way superstar logged his fifth three-hit outing of the season at Chase Field, reaching in every at-bat after grounding out to lead off the opening game of the four-game series.
He lined a double to the warning track behind center field and eventually came home on Freddie Freeman's groundout for a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning.
The Diamondbacks turned things around with solo home runs in the sixth and seventh innings and a two-run blast in the eighth.
Los Angeles skipper Dave Roberts announced earlier that Ohtani will serve as designated hitter when he takes the mound for his scheduled start in Phoenix on Wednesday.
The reigning National League MVP has hit back-to-back leadoff home runs since resuming two-way duties after being rested from the batting lineup for a handful of pitching starts.
