TOKYO - The yen surged to briefly enter the 155 level against the U.S. dollar from the upper 160 range Thursday, after comments by the Japanese finance minister heightened caution over intervention to stem the currency's recent slide.

Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama and Atsushi Mimura, vice finance minister for international affairs, earlier Thursday warned against the yen's slide as the currency weakened to 160.72 in Tokyo trading, its lowest since July 2024, amid the Middle East crisis.
