TOKYO - The Nikkei stock index on Thursday briefly topped the 60,000 line for the first time, lifted by some heavyweight technology shares, but ended the morning session lower on concerns over overheating.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 633.75 points, or 1.06 percent, from Wednesday to 58,952.11. The broader Topix index was down 44.89 points, or 1.20 percent, at 3,700.10.
