Officer attacked near Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris

A man armed with a hammer attacked and slightly injured a police officer in front of Notre Dame Cathedral in central Paris on Tuesday, police said, with no tourists apparently injured in the incident.The man struck the officer, who was patrolling with other policemen, at around 4:30 p.m. while yelling, "This is for Syria," Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said, adding the assailant seemed to have acted alone.(Getty)Another officer shot the man in the chest while about 900 people briefly took refuge inside the cathedral building.
