TOKYO - The Japanese major weekly Sunday Mainichi will suspend publication next April, ending its more than 100-year history, its publisher said Friday, citing a shrinking market and rising material costs.

The magazine, which the publisher Mainichi Shimbun Publishing Inc. says is Japan's oldest general-interest weekly, was launched in April 1922. Its final issue will go on sale April 27, 2027.

The magazine's average circulation stood at about 30,000 copies in fiscal 2025, which ended in April. A special issue marking then Crown Prince Akihito's marriage in April 1959 sold 1,567,000 copies.

The magazine is known for its university admissions coverage, including rankings of high schools by the number of their graduates accepted to the prestigious University of Tokyo and lists naming all successful applicants.
