TOKYO - Japan's weather agency said Thursday that the year's 30th typhoon has formed, making 2026 the first year since 2013 to see 30 or more typhoons.

As of Friday morning, Typhoon Champi was over the Marshall Islands in the Pacific, moving west at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour with an atmospheric pressure of 998 hectopascals at its center, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The typhoon is forecast to move westward while strengthening and could approach a chain of islands south of the Japanese main island of Kyushu next week or later.
