TOKYO - The Japanese government is considering crafting an extra budget for the current fiscal year through March to fund disaster relief and reconstruction, a source familiar with the matter said Wednesday.

The idea came after areas in the southwestern prefecture of Kumamoto were struck by a powerful earthquake in July and Chiba Prefecture near Tokyo saw intense downpours in recent months that damaged infrastructure.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's government is expected to seek approval of the envisaged extra budget during the regular parliamentary session early next year, the source said.
