YANGON - Japan's Charge d'Affaires ad interim in Myanmar Shogo Yoshitake met Thursday with Myanmar Foreign Minister Tin Maung Swe, according to the Foreign Ministry under Myanmar's pro-military government, making it the first publicly known meeting.
The two exchanged views on deepening cooperation between Japan and Myanmar, the ministry said.
Japan has not recognized the pro-military government under President Min Aung Hlaing, which was formed in April following military-organized elections. Tokyo has not sent a new ambassador since Ichiro Maruyama left in September 2024.
Myanmar has been ruled largely by the military since 1962, although the civilian administration led by ousted pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi was in power from 2016 until the 2021 coup.
The Japanese government has been calling for the release of Suu Kyi, who is under house arrest, and other detained people.
