On Sept. 11, the 18th Sun Tzu Cultural Tourism Festival kicked off in Guangrao County, Dongying City, Shandong Province. Scholars, experts, representatives of the Sun clan, and tourists from across the country gathered in the hometown of Sun Wu to partake in this grand cultural and tourism gala.
Hosted by the Dongying Municipal People's Government and co-organized by the Dongying Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism along with the Guangrao County People's Government, this year's festival carries the theme "Embracing the Dao to Forge New Paths, Uniting to Journey Far," and will run through Oct. 7.
The opening ceremony featured artistic performances and the release of new Sun Tzu culture achievements, including Sun Wu Yearbook, the pictorial Sun Wu, the Sage of War, and an AI short drama of the same name. The festival will also feature cultural tourism carnivals, Sun Tzu culture exchanges, a Lu Opera exhibition, a golden autumn music festival and other activities. Guangrao is leveraging the festival to promote research on Qi and Sun Tzu cultures, integrate cultural and tourism resources, and launch themed routes and experiences, with the event expected to attract 500,000 tourist visits and boost consumption.
As the birthplace of Sun Tzu culture, Guangrao has hosted 17 tourism festivals since 2005. The event has increasingly focused on turning cultural resources into tourism products by creating immersive experiences, revitalizing intangible cultural heritage for the market, and using digital technologies to bring traditional culture to younger audiences.
The festival is both a showcase of Guangrao's rich cultural heritage and a bridge connecting the past with the present and China with the wider world. By promoting cultural preservation, improving the city's tourism appeal and boosting local industries, it is helping Sun Tzu's ancient military wisdom take on new vitality in the modern era.
