JAKARTA - Volcanic ash from an eruption off Java Island since late last week halted operations at eight airports in Indonesia on Monday, including Jakarta's main Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, affecting almost 1,600 flights and 170,000 passengers.
More than 950 international flights, including those connecting Japan, were cancelled or diverted.
Mt. Anak Krakatau, located between the islands of Java and Sumatra, has erupted continuously since Friday night, spewing volcanic ash that has spread widely over parts of the islands.
The volcano was formed after Krakatau's tsunami-triggering eruption in 1883 that killed more than 36,000 people and left a massive crater. Anak Krakatau means "Child of Krakatau."
In 2018, hundreds of people were killed after an eruption of the volcano triggered a tsunami.
