TOKYO - Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is likely to retain Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi in an upcoming reshuffle of her Cabinet, government sources said Friday.
The shakeup of the Cabinet and the executive lineup of Takaichi's Liberal Democratic Party could take place in the latter half of this month, according to the sources.

Japan FY 2027 budget requests hit record 143 tril. yen amid fiscal concerns

Highest landslide warning issued for Yakushima Island, southwestern Japan
TOKYO - Japan's weather agency on Saturday issued its highest landslide warning for Yakushima Island in the southwestern Japanese prefecture of Kagoshima, calling for maximum vigilance in the morning amid heavy rain.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said it was likely a disaster had occurred in some form, as the Level 5 emergency warning was issued.

Japan, U.S. to advance investment cooperation under 2025 trade deal
WASHINGTON - Japan and the United States on Friday confirmed they will advance cooperation on investing in strategic sectors and honor the other terms of a trade deal they reached last year, even though President Donald Trump's tariff policies have changed significantly over time.
"We reaffirmed that last year's agreement remains unchanged," Japan's trade and industry minister Ryosei Akazawa told reporters in Washington after meeting separately with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

Uber, city near Mt. Fuji join hands in measures against overtourism
KOFU, Japan - The Japanese unit of U.S. ride-hailing company Uber Technologies Inc. and a municipality at the foot of Mt. Fuji signed an accord Friday to cooperate in measures against overtourism, aiming to address such problems as traffic congestion and littering.
It is the company's first such partnership with a Japanese municipality, Uber Japan Co. said.

Blocks installed by local gov't in Osaka criticized as hostile architecture
OSAKA - The city of Osaka has recently been inundated with over a hundred inquiries after it installed a series of rectangular objects protruding from the ground near JR Osaka Station, with people criticizing them as hostile architecture meant to deter homeless people from loitering in the space.
The random blocks jut out from a white paved surface measuring around 60 square meters that was formerly shrubbery. Passengers getting out of taxis nearby were seen having to walk along the roadside to avoid the blocks.

The Mongolian-born grappler traveled outside his stable to spar with other top-division wrestlers for the first time since rankings for the Sept. 13-27 tournament were announced and fought a spirited head-to-head series against yokozuna Onosato.
