TOKYO - Japan Airlines Co. said Tuesday that it will reduce its fuel surcharge for tickets for international flights to be issued in September and October, as fuel prices hiked by the U.S.-Iran war declined in June and July.

JAL will lower the surcharge for one-way tickets to North America and Europe to 50,000 yen ($313) from the record high 65,000 yen for July and August. The surcharges for tickets to China and Taiwan will be reduced to 12,400 yen from 16,900 yen.

All Nippon Airways Co. announced a reduction in surcharges for international flight tickets last Wednesday, setting them at 55,000 yen for North America and Europe, lower than the 65,000 in July and August, and 14,300 yen for China and Taiwan, down from 15,400 yen.

Fuel surcharges are fees added to airfares in accordance with fluctuations in fuel costs.

Following the signing of a preliminary peace deal by the United States and Iran in mid-June to end their war, fuel prices in June and July, which apply to tickets to be issued in September and October, fell.

The outlook for fuel surcharges later this year remains uncertain as U.S.-Iran negotiations to end the war are currently stalled.
