TOKYO - Japanese footballer Kaoru Mitoma will not face indictment over a traffic accident in Tokyo that left a cyclist injured, prosecutors said Friday.
Police referred the case to prosecutors after Mitoma, who plays for Brighton in the English Premier League, collided with a bicycle while driving through an intersection in Tokyo's Itabashi Ward on July 8. He was suspected of negligent driving resulting in injury.
The woman riding the bicycle suffered injuries that took about two weeks to heal, according to investigative sources.
A native of Kanagawa Prefecture near Tokyo, Mitoma, 29, joined Kawasaki Frontale in 2020 after graduating from the University of Tsukuba. A key player for Japan, he was not selected for the 2026 World Cup due to a left leg injury.
