TOKYO - Local authorities said Wednesday that 14 people have been confirmed dead after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Japan's southwestern prefecture of Kumamoto, with about 8,700 people staying in evacuation centers and shinkansen bullet train services mostly remaining suspended.
Among the dead were three people at an Aeon shopping mall in Kashima that was rocked by an explosion, which also left one person unresponsive and three others unaccounted for, following the 4:27 p.m. quake on Tuesday.
