TOKYO - A set of traditional Japanese paintings on eight sliding doors, reunited after about 150 years of separation, was shown to the media at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum on Friday.
The paintings created in the early 17th century by Kano Sogen Shigenobu, an artist of the prominent Kano school of painting, will be on display at the museum from Saturday through Oct. 18.
Four of the eight "fusuma" sliding doors are part of the collection of the British Museum, while the other four are owned by the long-established Miyakoshi family in Aomori Prefecture, northeastern Japan.
The British Museum has owned the four paintings depicting birds and flowers of fall and winter since 1937, while the Miyakoshi family has held the others depicting birds and flowers of spring since 1922, the Tokyo museum said.
