TOKYO - A Turkish man arrested over an immigration-related violation died from an illness during detention at a Tokyo police station earlier this month, police said.

The 48-year-old man complained of a stomachache a few days after his arrest on June 25, and died July 2. A doctor who examined him on July 1 determined that he did not need to be hospitalized, according to the police.

The Turkish national was arrested for allegedly lacking the proper documents after he caused a vehicle accident resulting in property damage while on an expressway.

He was found unresponsive inside the restroom of a detention facility at Takao Police Station in Tokyo in the early morning of July 2, according to the police. An autopsy showed he died from an illness, the police said without naming it.

"We will work hard on proper detention management and aim to prevent similar cases from happening," Station Chief Yukio Yamada said.
