TOKYO - China has lodged a protest with Japan through diplomatic channels after Japanese coast guard patrol vessels sheltered in the Taiwan Strait last week as Typhoon Bavi approached the southern prefecture of Okinawa, diplomatic sources said Monday.
Vessels from other countries were also sheltering in the area at the time, according to a Japanese government source. Japan Coast Guard ships have taken refuge on the high seas of the strait on previous occasions to avoid typhoons.
"China may be hypersensitive due to deteriorating Sino-Japanese ties," the source said.
Tokyo replied to Beijing that it could not accept the protest, according to the sources.
In September 2022, China lodged a protest with Japan over its patrol vessels remaining in the Taiwan Strait while taking shelter from a typhoon.
