Japan parliament faces final crunch week with key bills outstanding
TOKYO - Japan's parliament enters the final scheduled week of its current session, with more than a dozen bills still awaiting approval following a gridlock caused by an opposition boycott over divisive electoral reform.
Thirteen government bills including changes to address the dwindling number of imperial family members have yet to be enacted, along with lawmaker-submitted bills such as a "second capital" to back up Tokyo -- a key aim of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's junior coalition partner the Japan Innovation Party.

Heatwave grips southwest Japan, record-tying 39.3 C at Kyushu tourist spot
TOKYO - Parts of Japan's southwestern region of Kyushu saw a hot summer day on Saturday, with the mercury hitting a record-tying 39.3 C in Dazaifu, a tourist spot in Fukuoka Prefecture.
Of the country's 914 observation points, 43 recorded temperatures of 35 C or higher, meeting the Japan weather agency's definition of an "extremely hot day."

Philippine museum exhibit features WWII diary of Japanese POW
MANILA - Copies of sketches and writings from the World War II diary of a Japanese engineer who was stationed in the Philippines at the time and became a prisoner-of-war are on display at a museum in Manila for the first time outside Japan.
The "Ryojin Nikki" diary of Shinichi Komatsu, commercially published in 1975, is featured in the exhibit that runs through Aug. 16 to invite "audiences to reflect on the complexities of war and its impact on individuals - beyond nationality and era," according to the Ayala Museum.

Powerful typhoon passes over Okinawa, injuring 5
TOKYO - A powerful typhoon swept across Japan's southern prefecture of Okinawa on Saturday, bringing violent winds and heavy rain that left some residents injured.
Typhoon Bavi packed winds of up to 144 kilometers per hour over Okinawa's Miyako Island, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. As of Saturday, five people had sustained minor injuries related to strong winds and high waves, the prefectural government said.

Tennis: Japan's Kamiji completes career Golden Slam with Wimbledon crown
LONDON - Japanese top seed Yui Kamiji completed the career Golden Slam on Saturday as she claimed her maiden Wimbledon women's wheelchair singles crown with an emphatic 6-0, 6-0 victory over No. 2 seed Diede de Groot of the Netherlands.

Japan tests reusable rocket prototype RV-X to reduce costs
NOSHIRO, Japan - Japan's space agency tested a prototype of a reusable rocket in Akita Prefecture in the country's northeast on Saturday, paving the way for cutting the costs of future space launches.
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's RV-X rocket landed successfully after reaching a maximum height of around 11 meters and moving about 16 meters horizontally in the test conducted at a facility in Noshiro. The RV-X flew for about 40 seconds.

Japanese pianist Muroi dies at 105
TOKYO - Mayako Muroi, a Japanese pianist who continued her career past the age of 100, has died of natural causes at her Tokyo home, a source close to her said Saturday. She was 105.
Muroi, who began playing the piano at 6 years old, graduated from what is currently the Tokyo University of the Arts. At 23, she made her debut as a soloist in a performance with what is now the NHK Symphony Orchestra in January 1945 during World War II.
