TOKYO - Mayako Muroi, a Japanese pianist who continued her career past the age of 100, has died of natural causes at her Tokyo home, a source close to her said Saturday. She was 105.
Muroi, who began playing the piano at 6 years old, graduated from what is currently the Tokyo University of the Arts. At 23, she made her debut as a soloist in a performance with what is now the NHK Symphony Orchestra in January 1945 during World War II.
Following the war, she traveled to Germany to study and shifted her base to Europe until her return to Japan in 1980.
