TOKYO - Sekiwake Wakatakakage will sit out the upcoming Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament at IG Arena after undergoing emergency surgery for a training injury that left him at risk of paralysis, his stablemaster said Monday.
The winner of May's Summer Grand Sumo Tournament had the surgery last Wednesday after being diagnosed with compartment syndrome -- a circulatory condition that can lead to irreversible nerve and muscle damage -- and remains in hospital in a stable condition, according to stablemaster Arashio.
