Australia, Solomon Islands to pursue comprehensive strategic treaty

SYDNEY - Australia and the Solomon Islands agreed Wednesday to start negotiations on a comprehensive strategic treaty, in a diplomatic win for Canberra after years of the South Pacific nation drawing closer to China.

The announcement followed a meeting between Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his Solomon Islands' counterpart Matthew Wale, who is on his first overseas visit after the opposition leader was elected prime minister last month.
