SEOUL -- South Korea retrieved a combined 139.6 billion won (US$92.4 million) worth of criminal proceeds in 2025, while repatriating 274 criminals who had fled overseas, the justice ministry said.
The amount marks an increase compared with an annual average of 120 billion won confiscated between 2002 and March this year, according to the ministry on Monday.
The number of repatriated criminals from overseas rose nearly fourfold to 274 from 70 in 2022, driven by strengthened international coordination with foreign authorities.
This year, the ministry has so far repatriated 97 criminals from overseas, including drug trafficker Park Wang-yeol and a couple accused of conducting a major romance scam in Cambodia.
