WASHINGTON - U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday swore in Kevin Warsh as the chair of the Federal Reserve at a time of rising inflation due to the ongoing war against Iran, a development that has made the near-term interest rate cuts sought by the president increasingly unlikely.

Japan PM Takaichi calls on BOJ chief for "appropriate" monetary policy
TOKYO - Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Friday asked Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda to implement "appropriate" monetary policy ahead of the central bank's policy meeting next month, given the government's efforts to ease the impact of rising prices, the BOJ chief said.
Ueda told reporters after meeting with Takaichi that they did not discuss specifics about an interest rate hike, amid market expectations that the BOJ could decide to raise the policy rate to 1.0 percent from the current 0.75 percent at its meeting on June 15 and 16.

TOKYO - A Japanese oil tanker that transited the Strait of Hormuz late last month is expected to arrive in Japan possibly on Monday, the government said, making it the first such case since the Iran war erupted and left traffic through the vital energy route heavily restricted.
As the resource-poor nation awaits the arrival of the tanker operated by a unit of major refiner Idemitsu Kosan Co., Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi spoke with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi on Friday, stressing the importance of "free and safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz for vessels of all countries."

Kyoto school flouted political neutrality in fatal Okinawa trip: government
TOKYO - The operator of a private high school in Kyoto Prefecture violated the law obliging schools to maintain political neutrality during a "peace education" trip that culminated in a fatal boat accident, the education ministry said Friday.
It is the first time that the government has made such a determination under the Basic Act on Education, according to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The law states that schools shall refrain from political activities.

China voices opposition to U.S. missile system deployment in Japan
BEIJING - China on Friday expressed its firm opposition to the deployment of U.S. midrange missile systems in Japan, saying it threatens regional security and exacerbates the risks of military confrontation and an arms race.

Japan defense force member fired for driving without license for 24 yrs
CHIBA, Japan - A Japan Ground Self-Defense Force member assigned to a base east of Tokyo was dismissed Friday after driving vehicles without a license for 24 years, according to the GSDF.
The 48-year-old master sergeant of the 1st Airborne Brigade based at Camp Narashino in Funabashi, Chiba Prefecture, drove vehicles multiple times to transport troops and equipment during exercises even though the member's license had expired in 2001, according to the GSDF camp.
